Well, today Zoey Moon experienced her first 6.9 earthquake! And the 4 aftershocks that followed (the first I know was a 3.3)... It was centered in Baja, CA, south of San Luis ~ about 70 miles south of us. We had friends who felt it in San Diego and Phoenix (both about 3 hours/200 miles away from us on either side). The earthquake lasted over a minute...the neighbor's truck was rocking in the street! Our friends with pools described their backyard as tsunamis! We don't have a pool, but our toilets were splashing around! Of course, Zoey had no idea this was happening!
Here are some pictures that we took since her birth up through today...
"PUT ME BACK IN!!!" She peed on her blanket...twice...lol
The birth story... On the morning of March 18, 2010, Bryan and I went to work out at the instructor gym on post. I was on my cool-down phase on the elliptical when I felt like I had peed my pants. Not being something I normally do, I immediately thought that I had broken my water. Buuut, it wasn't a lot of water...just enough to feel like I had incontinence, which I don't have...lol I sat on a mat and "stretched" for a few minutes...trying to check things out down there...not wanting to interrupt Bryan's workout and get his workout partner excited or anything. Finally, though, I told Bryan we needed to leave. We went home and showered, got a few things situated (like Fergs and Kitty), and headed to the hospital about an hour later. I called Annette Casey, my midwife, to tell her that we were headed that direction. She said she'd meet us there. After a few tests, I was convinced we'd be heading home after a false alarm, and that I'd feel stupid, but at least we could get some errands done while we were in town. Well, turns out that I was leaking amniotic fluid. They needed me on antibiotics for at least 4 hours before I delivered, so they admitted me right away and got the IV going. I was supposed to do laps around the Labor & Delivery Unit (and stimulate my nipples - told ya...TMI!) to try and get contractions going; Annette would be back in 4 hours to officially break my water (no more of this wimply leaking stuff!). We did so many laps around that small hallway...within 5 minutes I had seen every square foot of hallway we were allowed to venture down. And we did this over and over, stopping at each end to do squats. Finally, Annette got back to our room and broke my water - SHAZAM! What a crazy feeling... Within 15 minutes I had my first contraction. Noone can prepare you for that! I had been dilated 3 cm and thinned 95% for about 1-2 weeks prior to this, and Zoey was very low all that time, too. That morning I was dilated to 4 cm and thinned 100%. The next 2.5 hours was a blur. There is no escaping a contraction. You HAVE to ride it out, and there is nothing you can do to relieve the pain. Unless you get pain meds, of course, but I didn't. Yes, voluntarily. Bryan had already inflated and filled up the birthing tub, so I got in that bad boy right away. There's no way I'd ever NOT birth in a tub again...it was incredible. Annette came back when I told the nurse that I felt like I needed to push, and soon...that's all I was doing for a few minutes. Finally, after 2.5 hours of labor, Zoey Moon made her grand entrance into this world! It was an amazing experience for both Bryan and I, to say the least. The hospital staff was incredible; we were well taken care of! They support breastfeeding and help you out immensely, have rooming in (unless there's a problem), and permitted us to use our cloth diapers. We have been so fortunate!
